How Plastic Fading Happens

Exterior plastic trim is manufactured with pigments and stabilizers that protect color over time, but UV exposure progressively breaks these down. As the protective compounds degrade, the pigment molecules in the plastic surface begin to oxidize, turning the black color into gray and eventually white. The surface also becomes more porous and chalky in texture, which accelerates the fading further.
