Before you buy new rims, you need one number more than any other: your bolt pattern. Get it wrong and the wheel won't mount. Get it right and fitment becomes easy. Here's how to read and measure it in a few minutes.
What a bolt pattern is
A bolt pattern (also called PCD, or pitch circle diameter) describes two things: how many lug holes your wheel has, and the diameter of the imaginary circle those holes sit on. It's written as a number of lugs by a diameter, for example 5x114.3 (five lugs on a 114.3 mm circle) or 6x139.7 (common on trucks).

How to count the lugs
Start simple: count the number of bolt holes on your wheel. Most cars use 4 or 5 lugs. Trucks and larger SUVs often use 6 or 8. This first number is the easy half of the pattern.
How to measure the diameter
The measuring method depends on whether you have an even or odd number of lugs.
- Even lug count (4, 6, 8): measure straight across, center to center, from one hole to the hole directly opposite it.
- Odd lug count (5): measure from the back of one hole to the center of the hole two positions away (skipping the adjacent one). Five-lug patterns are the trickiest, which is why a fitment chart helps.
Measure in millimeters for accuracy. Common results include 5x100, 5x112, 5x114.3, 5x120, 6x135, and 6x139.7.

Bolt pattern isn't the only number
Once your bolt pattern matches, confirm three more specs for a clean fit: offset (how far the mounting face sits from the wheel's centerline), center bore (the hole that centers the wheel on the hub), and diameter and width. A wheel can share your bolt pattern and still rub or sit wrong if the offset is off, so treat all four together.
Common bolt patterns and what drives them
Certain patterns show up again and again, and knowing yours helps you recognize compatible options quickly:
- 5x114.3 is one of the most widespread patterns on cars and crossovers, which means a large selection of wheels fits it.
- 5x120 appears on many performance and European vehicles.
- 6x139.7 is a classic truck and full-size SUV pattern built for heavier loads.
- 5x112 is common on many European sedans and wagons.
Two wheels can share a bolt pattern yet still differ in offset or center bore, so treat the pattern as your entry ticket, not the whole answer.
Why hub-centric fit matters too
Even with the right bolt pattern, a wheel needs to center properly on the hub. The center bore is the hole in the middle of the wheel that seats on the hub's raised lip. If the bore is larger than your hub, hub-centric rings bridge the gap so the wheel runs true and vibration-free. If the bore is smaller, the wheel simply won't fit. Always check that the center bore is equal to or larger than your hub diameter.
What happens if the bolt pattern is wrong
A mismatched bolt pattern is not something you can force or adapt safely for daily driving. The wheel won't seat evenly against the hub, which is a serious safety problem.
